You've tried everything except the eye itself

f.lux. Dark mode. Blue light glasses. A better monitor. Every one of those works on the light before it reaches you. None of them works on your eye.

At the centre of your retina sits a dense layer of pigment that absorbs short-wavelength light before it reaches the photoreceptors behind it. It is optical hardware, and it is the one part of your eye your body cannot manufacture. It is imported from what you eat.

Nine hours a day at a fixed distance asks a lot of it. Most desk-worker diets do not keep up.

The six that matter most

  • Lutein — the outer macular pigment. Your body cannot make it.
  • Zeaxanthin — the mid macular pigment, closer to the centre where the light load rises.
  • Meso-zeaxanthin — the central pigment. Close to absent from the human diet; your retina builds it from lutein, and only when there is lutein to spare.
  • Astaxanthin — a carotenoid from microalgae, rarely included at this level.
  • Bilberry extract — a northern European berry, included for its anthocyanins.
  • Saffron — crocus stigma extract. Gram for gram one of the most expensive botanicals on earth; roughly 150 flowers make a single gram.

One capsule. With food. Every day.

  1. Take one capsule daily. Any time of day. Consistency matters far more than timing.
  2. Take it with a meal. Carotenoids are fat-soluble. Taken with food containing some fat, more of what you swallow is absorbed.
  3. Keep going for three months. Macular pigment accumulates slowly, and a two-week trial tells you nothing either way.

Why three months?

Macular pigment is laid down gradually, not switched on. The trial behind this category of formula ran for 180 days before it measured anything. Three bottles is the shortest run that gives it a fair test — and it works out $16 cheaper than buying them one at a time.

FAQ

How is this different from blue light glasses?
Blue light glasses filter light before it reaches your eye. This works on the eye itself. It is also worth knowing that a 2023 Cochrane review of 17 randomised trials found blue-light filtering lenses probably make no difference to eye strain from computer use.

Can I just eat kale instead?
For two of the three, kale is genuinely good. Lutein and zeaxanthin are both in dark leafy greens, and eaten consistently with some fat, you are covering those. The third one you cannot eat. Meso-zeaxanthin is close to absent from the human diet — trace amounts in the skin of a few fish, and almost nothing else. Your retina builds it by converting lutein, and only when there is lutein to spare. That is the part of the filter a plate of greens cannot reach, however much of it you eat.

Is the lutein from marigold? I have a flower allergy.
Lutein in supplements is commonly extracted from marigold. If you have a known allergy to marigold or related flowers, check with your doctor before taking this.

I already take a multivitamin.
Most multivitamins contain little or no lutein, and almost none contain meso-zeaxanthin. Check the panel on yours — if it lists all three macular carotenoids at meaningful amounts, you may not need this.
